Bandhamster's venue directory started from real, open map data rather than a blank table — here's exactly where it came from and what that data's licence asks of us in return.
Venue directory
The venue directory's starter data — names, addresses, postcodes and coordinates — is sourced from OpenStreetMap, © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0. Some venues are also enriched from live OpenStreetMap lookups when a band adds a gig at a venue not already in the directory. We don't display OpenStreetMap's own map tiles anywhere on the site — only the underlying place data.
A venue page updates as bands add real gigs to their own diary; the underlying place details (address, coordinates, website) come from the source above unless a venue has been claimed and corrected by whoever runs it.
Your rights under the ODbL
The ODbL is a copyleft licence for data, not just code — you're free to copy, adapt and use this data for any purpose, provided any public use is attributed and any substantial public redistribution of the underlying database itself (not just a page built from it) stays under the same licence.
